Emergency Department at Morristown Memorial Hospital Starts First EMS    Fellowship Program in the State of New Jersey

Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown, NJ - The Emergency Department at Morristown Memorial Hospital, is spearheading the first EMA Fellowship Program in New Jersey.  This program will fall under the direction of Mark Merlin, EMT-P, DO, FACEP and Sol Nevins, MD FACEP, MICU Medical Director and past recipient of EMS Medical Director of the Year for New Jersey.

According to Dr. Merlin, who works for Emergency Medical Associates (EMA), the Fellow who is selected for this position will not only have an integral part in teaching EMS to the residents through Emergency Medicine Conferences, but he/she will play an integral part in pre-hospital education/medical control in a system consisting of Mobile Intensive Care Units, a critical care transport unit, and a large BLS ambulance service owned and operated by the Atlantic Health System.

Dr. Merlin stated “the Fellow will respond to 911 calls which will take place with the paramedics and use additional medications and ALS devices.  The Fellow will also be responsible for routine lectures and act as a medical resource to the largest paramedic training program in New Jersey encompassing 10 health care systems.”

Morristown Memorial Hospital is recognized for state-of-the-art patient care in Emergency Medicine.  Under the Chairmanship of Mark Mandell, MD, FACEP, and the Associate Chairmanship of William Felegi, DO, FACEP, the Emergency Department at Morristown Memorial is recognized for being a regional and national leader not only in Emergency Medicine Research and patient satisfaction, but also in the development of Emergency Medicine programs such as the ED Ultrasound Fellowship.

Additionally, under the leadership of Michael Gerardi, MD, FAAP, FACEP, Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, the Pediatric Emergency Department at Morristown Memorial Hospital is one of the top-rated pediatric emergency departments in the Northeast.

The Emergency Department at Morristown Memorial Hospital, which is also a regional trauma center and saw over 70,000 visits through the ED in 2003, is the base station for MICU State Certified paramedics covering several towns and counties in New Jersey.
