Management and Ownership Participation

As a “pit doc” involved in the early development of the group, my goal was that EMA would grow into an organization of colleagues rather than “coolies”. From the first, EMA was set up with a horizontal ownership structure, and new physicians were encouraged to achieve full ownership and participation as rapidly as possible. Monthly board meetings and quarterly shareholder meetings give each physician the chance to be heard, and there is ample opportunity to participate in the governance of the group.

Democratic governance is not always easy, and change in our group sometimes requires a difficult political process to achieve consensus. The advantage is that EMA has been able to afford its members a degree of participation and fairness that is the envy of emergency physicians working for the “closely held” groups. It has also attracted the most professionally oriented and highest quality physicians coming to this area of the country, physicians I am proud to have as my colleagues. For physicians in the NY/NJ Metro Area, EMA is “the group to get in-to.”
