EMA Begins Providing Emergency Department Services to St. Vincent’s Hospital ManhattanDate: November 3, 2004EMA Begins Providing Emergency Department Services to St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan November 1, 2004 Livingston, NJ – Emergency Medical Associates (EMA) announced the launch of its strategic partnership with St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan to enhance patient care services and medical management of its emergency department. EMA was chosen as the strategic partner of St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan because of its expertise and experience in emergency medicine management. “Providing the best emergency services in the area is one of the core competencies Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Center is concentrating on as part of its turn-around efforts,” said Kathy Galvin, Executive Director, St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan. “We are striving to make the patients’ experience as comfortable and efficient as possible while they are here. This new partnership will make St. Vincent’s the preferred provider in this area.” More than 55,000 patients a year are served in the St. Vincent’s emergency department. It houses a Level I Trauma Center, capable of treating the most severe emergencies with trained experts in every major specialty available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Over 60% of St. Vincent's admissions come through the emergency department. “Building on the considerable strengths of St. Vincent’s emergency department, we will be focusing on operational improvements that will make the patient experience more attractive, such as reduced waiting times, shorter time to see a physician, and quicker test results,” stated Dr. Michael Gerardi, acting director of St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan emergency department and Vice President of EMA. “EMA’s 25 years of proven experience will make the department more efficient while continuing to meet the hospital's standards for high-quality, patient-centered care.” The strategic partnership is part of an overall renovation to create the emergency department of the 21st Century. In September, the hospital broke ground on the new $25 million dollar Rudolph W. Giuliani Trauma Center. When completed, it will be one of the most advanced emergency medicine facilities in the United States. The new trauma center will guarantee that St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan will be prepared to handle the city’s every day emergencies, as well any large scale disaster or mass casualty event. The new trauma center will be equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment, as well as decontamination facilities and a built-in surge capacity infrastructure. The new design will incorporate lessons learned from the September 11, 2001 tragedy to create the city’s most highly advanced emergency medicine facility. The construction will expand the emergency department from 10,000 square feet to 21,000 square feet. The expansion and renovation will include a redesigned emergency department waiting room, triage and registration areas and a dedicated, state-of-the-art comprehensive radiology suite with a computerized axial tomography (CT) Scanner located on the unit to minimize patient transfer. The new emergency department will also include a dedicated child friendly pediatric emergency unit; a dedicated behavioral health unit, a quick access urgent care unit for minor injuries and illnesses; and a dedicated psychiatric treatment area. St. Vincent’s will also be focusing on downtown commuters who can be seen quickly for minor conditions and return to work, but also will be more aware of the tertiary and subspecialty care offered at the hospital. “A re-energized emergency department, with faster and expanded services will better serve local communities as well as commuters in New York City,” said Dr. Gerardi. “Enhanced services lead to improved patient care, while increasing patient satisfaction with the emergency department experience.”
