  • EMA becomes key national player in syndromic surveillance as a result its ability to analyze and benchmark current ED visit data against it's clinical database of over 7 millions ED encounters.

  • EMA initiated the utilization of CIMs (Clinical Information Managers) in the ED to assist physicians with documentation.
1995
  • EMA employs Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners in the ED.
  • Access to Emergency Medical Services Act of 1995 is introduced, to establish a national definition of a medical emergency.
1992
  • EMA affiliate, Emergency Medical Systems, established to develop Emergency Department Information Management and computer-assisted charting systems.
1991
  • Pediatric emergency medicine is approved as a subspecialty of emergency medicine and pediatrics.
1985
  • The Consolidated Omibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA) is enacted.
  • The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) is enacted as part of COBRA.
  • EMA affiliate, Emergency Medical Consultants established
1984
  • EMA affiliate, Emergency Medical Billing established.
1983
  • EMA ACC affiliate, Emergency Medical Offices established.
  • Emergency Medical Associates Research Foundation established.
1981
  • New Jersey selected as Medicare DRG pilot state resulting in 3 EMA contracts converting to direct ED physician billing.
1980
  • Senate Bill 125 enacted. Provided for strong State EMS Commission with substantial emergency representation, and provided that the EMS Director be an emergency physician.
  • First NJ allopathic Emergency Medicine residency program initiated at EMA contracts Morristown Memorial and Overlook.
1979
  • Emergency Medicine recognized as the 23rd medical specialty.
1978
  • EMA signs first contract with Mountainside Hospital.
  • Assembly Bill 1301 enacted. Established that only other practicing emergency physicians could be expert witnesses in malpractice suits against emergency physicians.
1977
  • Emergency Medical Associates of New Jersey, P.A. established.
1976
  • American Board of Emergency Medicine formed.
1975
  • American Medical Association's House of Delegates recommends that emergency medicine be recognized as a specialty.
1974
  • National EMS Week proclaimed by President Gerald Ford.
1973
  • Emergency Medical Services Systems Act provides federal guidelines and funding for EMS systems development and defines the components of an EMS system.
1970
  • First emergency medicine residency program established at the University of Cincinnati.
1968
  • American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) formed.
